Difference Between RJ45 vs RJ48

Two powerful registered jacks that physically look the same, and if you are not an expert, will have difficulty in differentiating them.

Their similarities:

RJ45 and RJ48 have the same modular plug, which is 8P8C. An extra 2 pair of wires are used for transmitting and receiving data. The similarity in their modular connector is difficult to pinpoint and their usage is dictated by the hardware.

The differences:

RJ45 has pins (1, 2, 3 and 6). The sixth pin is used for the reception and transmission of data. This RJ is used for local area networking, maintaining the wiresonlyfor short distances. It is also common in UTP (Unshielded Twisted Pair) that fits CAT1-6, with CAT5e as the popular one.

RJ48 has two configurations of pins – 1, 2, 4 and 5; 1, 2, 7 and 8. The reason is that they need different configurations depending on their usage. The most common usage of RJ48 is used for T1 data lines needed for longer distances and exposure to environmental factors. Therefore, RJ48 needs a stronger protection with STP (Shielded Twisted Pair).


For RJ45 and RJ48, there are no winners, only confusion. Their attacks are different and are wired for two different purposes. They can’t be interchanged nor can be a replacement for each other.
