The system works automatically to close the vocal cord and epiglottis as you swallow to prevent food getting into the airway passage.

Glottis is a narrow passage opening for air in the throat. Your vocal cord, deep or shrill depends on the expansion and contraction of glottis.  Big glottis produces deep voice while small glottis yields shrill voice.

Expansion border of Epiglottis determines glottis opening.  Epiglottis is leaf-shaped flap tucked away at the base of the tongue. It is attached to the tongue and hyoid bond by ligaments.
