Difference Between DVI vs DVI-D

DVI, which is the acronym of Digital Video Interface, is a connector that links the card to a monitor or projector. It can be easily identified as the white connector in the NVIDIA-based graphic cards. It also has greater in length compared to the VGA connector, which is colored blue. DVI connectors come in pairs – female and male counterparts. The female connector is the one attached to the graphic card.

Up to date, there are two well-known DVI connector types – the DVI-I and DVI-D. They greatly differ on how many needles/pins are needed to be connected. Their function is also different as DVI carries two kinds of signals – analog and digital. DVI-I has the ability to send digital signals out. And it is completely compatible with LCD and CRT monitors.

The DVI-D connector has lesser pins required as seen on the graphics card. It only sends out digital signals, as most of the data nowadays are in digital mode. Expect then that this connector is compatible only with LCD monitors. DVI-D has two kinds – it can be single link of dual link. Single link requires more pins than the dual link as there are no pins in the middle.
