Difference Between Diamond vs Gemstone

Gemstone is a type of mineral formed below Earth’s surface. Some gemstones are brought from mining and different natural earth processes such as volcanic eruption or plate tectonic movements. Most gemstones are hard minerals; however, gemstones used in jewelry making are soft gemstones because of its aesthetic and lustrous properties. There are two classifications of gemstone, the precious ones and the semi-precious ones. Precious gemstones are Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald and Diamond. Amongst all gemstones, Diamond is the most popular one. Since the ancient history, diamonds were already used as a decorative item. It is considered the hardest and most durable gemstone. In comparing gemstones, seven characteristics are being considered, color, clarity, cut, carat, luster, rarity and hardness.

In jewelry making, Color is the most regarded characteristic of gemstones because it gives appeal to the jewelry being made. Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald and Amethyst are considered to have the most beautiful colors among the gemstones. However, Diamond— a colorless gem is an exception. In the other hand, cutting gemstones are done to enhance its aesthetic value. In terms of gemstone cuts, diamonds have no permanent geometry unlike other gemstones making it more unique.

A gemstone’s value is determined by its carat density and weight. Carat weight of a gemstone does not depend on its size but its density. Hence, a diamond and a ruby having the same size don’t necessarily have the same carat. In terms of rarity, most gemstones aren’t rare, diamond too is common. However, their beautiful color and clarity characteristics make it rare.

Lastly, the most important characteristic in valuing gemstones is its hardness. Gemstone’s hardness is measured by Moh’s hardness scale. Based on this scale, diamond is rated 10— the hardness on the said scale. Ideally, the harder the gemstone is, the more durable it will be. Being conscious of the hardness value of each gemstone can greatly help in deciding what suitable gemstone to use in a specific activity.
